(ZyBooks, 2019) The most common way for a virus to spread is via email, where a user is tricked into downloading and running an application that installs a virus. Computer systems are vulnerable to viruses like malware because we surf the web so often downloading new material or add-ons for our applications that we often never think twice before downloading. Malware is short for “Malicious Software” and contains unwanted software that is typically downloaded via an attachment from a download that you may have thought was something else. However viruses don’t always come in the form of malware, sometimes a virus can be in the form of Adware(looking to promote something for sell or purchase) or Spyware (looking to collect information about the owner of the computer or files on the computer). 

Ping commands can execute Denial of Service(DOS) attacks.The point of a DOS attack is to overwhelm a server in a way that the site traffic is temporarily halted. New visitors receive an error while attempting to communicate with the affected website.
