Post 7: The Internet and The Web

The Internet and the Web.

Something that I am excited to learn more about coming into this course was the internet and the web and as the course has progress it remains the cause of my excitement. In my opinion web3 is going to revolutionize the way we look at computing and I find it very important to learn as much as I can about how it works and what all is possible. After reading the book The origin by Dan Brown I realized that we are not that far away from artificial intelligence controlling and monitoring our every move. The very thing that we longed to create will become the very thing that will give our civilization the most problems we’ve ever endured. In this Harvard business review of Web3 the author explains (Stackpole, T. 2022) “Advocates argue that Web3 will create new economies, new classes of products, and new services online; that it will return democracy to the web; and that is going to define the next era of the internet. Like the Marvel villain Thanos, Web3 is inevitable.” The internet relies on basic functions of the computer in order to operate like wifi and RAM and storage. Without RAM we would not be able to run certain apps that hold memory in live time and without storage and hard drives we would not be able to remember half of the things we save and put away. While trying to describe how the internet and web uses programming languages and program execution methods, I realized that I didn't have to do much research at all...The websites on the internet are all big programs. Websites like Instagram and Google that we use everyday were built using programming languages like Python. Python is probably the most popular programming language out and even more so popular because it is for beginners who are just learning to code. In most articles I read Im finding that Python is a great starting point for new coders because it is so easy to learn. The entire web is running off of different languages and execution methods like Python and other languages like "C# and Javascript." Every single website or app that we use is ran by specific programming languages and methods. Database management plays a huge role in the success of these mainstream websites that we use everyday to operate our social lives within our internet services. (IBM, 2010) "A database management system (or DBMS) is essentially nothing more than a computerized data-keeping system. Users of the system are given facilities to perform several kinds of operations on such a system for either manipulation of the data in the database or the management of the database structure itself." In a way a database is similar to Blockchain technology other than the process in which it is stored the blockchain holds information just like a database. The Basis of a database is to hold and store information and make sure it is secured with a private and public key. The blockchain is a database 2.0 with even more security and an open governing policy. Decentralized. The future of the internet is decentralized and blockchain will possibly secure the networks. Here is a picture below from Bitcoin white paper on how blockchain technology works.

With the use of blockchain we can amplify the security within the internet and the trust between the people and the government. The internet and the web is becoming the heartbeat of our society and will be the link that either bands us together or disconnects us. The security is the key between strengthening the internet and financial system and governance using blockchain technology. The internet is the vehicle and the blockchain is the engine. We need to drive it!
